Bombolulu is a design powerhouse, harnessing the skills of more than 100 Kenyan artisans to craft thousands of jewellery, textiles, leather goods and wood carved homewares designs each year, many of them making their way across the seas to bring a touch of Africa to homes and lives around the world.
But Bombolulu is much more than the sum of its Mombasa workshops. It's also a clinic, a nursery school, a social hall, a sports centre, and a HIV prevention centre, providing unprecedented access to these essential services for its workforce of differently-abled craftspeople - people who, despite their many skills, also have serious physical limitations and considerable social and economic disadvantages to contend with. It's a place where these artisans can become empowered and fully-integrated members of their communities.
They've been doing it since 1969, and we think they are doing a pretty darn good job of it! Here are some of our favs - but make sure you check out our full range of Bombolulu jewellery in the market. Furaha ununuzi!
