They have got to be one of the most versatile and practical items on any self-respecting wanderuster's packing lists - scarves can be used for anything from sleeping under to hiding behind, head covering to bikini modifying, waterbottle carrying in Cambodia to small child carrying in Africa, beach lounging to mountain trekking.
But if you're anything like me, actually using a scarf as an item of clothing is the most challenging of all scarf incarnations. I know in my heart that they are the missing link in converting my travelling jeans and tanks into passable theatre going attire, but I cannot for the life of me wear a scarf without looking like a cotton caterpillar is trying to spin its chrysalis over my head. Regardless, I have always packed one, because the scarf's multifaceted practicality inevitably trumps my vanity.
