The Airbnb conundrum

Aimee Pearce

I'm an Airbnb advocate. For sure. A space created by travellers, for travellers. To stay in privately owned accommodation instead of chain hotels. To gain local knowledge from hosts when you're travelling. What's not to love? It's the perfect platform for travellers right? In fact I love it so much after staying in Airbnb accommodation almost exclusively for our travels over a few years, we decided to set up our own Airbnb property. We built in under our existing home and now rent out our space on Airbnb. We live in paradise, why not share it with other travellers right? [Have a sticky-beak if you're in the market for a Sunshine Coast holiday!].

BUT.. (why do great things always need to have a but???) I've been thinking quite a lot lately about the impact Airbnb is having on the permanent housing market. This isn't a new problem, nor is the housing shortage entirely Airbnb's fault, but as a responsible citizen, (of both the world and my local community) I feel obligated to question the scenario we find ourselves in and ask if there is a way we can do it better.

Santorini vs Amalfi - an attempt to compare perfection

Aimee Pearce

So a friend recently asked me if they should visit the Greek Island of Santorini OR Positano on the Amalfi Coast in Italy. It may have been one of the only recorded times in my life when I was actually speechless. For a moment. The cogs were just ticking. There was a lot to think about. Italy vs Greece. Beach against beach. Fresh sardines for lunch or would you prefer grilled octopus. And don't even get me started on the views?!?!?! Sunset over the caldera or THAT Positano beach? It actually might be impossible to choose.

Travel resolutions

Aimee Pearce

OK so it's a new year...for many the first day of the working year. And there's a thing about setting resolutions right? Getting in shape, being a better human, that kind of thing? Well I'll come to that in another post but I'd rather kick the year off on a more positive, exciting note and for me that really comes down to travel goals. Anyone with me?

A million reasons to love home

Aimee Pearce

I love the kind of weekends that leave you with a new appreciation of where you live. Us wanderlusters are blessed (or cursed depending which way you look at it) with a zest for life and passion for travel that on good days makes us beautiful dreamers, seekers, explorers, wanderers and on bad days leaves us feeling unsettled, disconnected, and if we are really honest, a little irritating to be around because we can't connect with the here and now.

That's why if you're a wanderluster at heart who can't ALWAYS be wandering, it's important for your own mental health (and probably even more so for those around you) to stay connected and in awe of the beauty around you - in the here and now. So you're not always dreaming of somewhere else, somewhere better.

Adventure is a path

Elissa Webster

“Adventure is a path. Real adventure – self-determined, self-motivated, often risky – forces you to have firsthand encounters with the world. The world the way it is, not the way you imagine it. Your body will collide with the earth and you will bear witness. In this way you will be compelled to grapple with the limitless kindness and bottomless cruelty of humankind – and perhaps realize that you yourself are capable of both. This will change you. Nothing will ever again be black-and-white.” ― Mark Jenkins

On the road....5 awesome modes of transport

Aimee Pearce

Catching public transport just doesn't have the same appeal at home. There's nothing exotic about jumping on a bus in Brisbane city or slogging it through the burbs on your daily train commute. Where I live on the Sunshine Coast we barely even have public transport! And yet, when you're in a foreign country, the way you get from point A to point B, all become part of the glorious, romantic adventure. Whether it's riding on the back of a motorbike in Indonesia, (without the inhibitions of a helmet) or dodging heart-palpitation-inducing traffic in an Indian rickshaw - the way we travel becomes part of the beautiful fabric of our journey tales. But there are risks and rewards with every option!
